In a hurried world, here are some intentional practices in slowing down.
Practices
When you first wake up, before anything else, go outside to meet the light. Close your eyes, feel your feet on the ground, and listen to the morning sounds.
Every day, 3 minutes
Try to eat your meals out of reach and out of earshot of your phone. Bring mindfulness to chewing slowly, appreciating the flavors in your mouth, and feeling your body be nourished by food (and your presence).
Put on one or two of your favorite songs to dance. Choose a time of the day that works with your schedule so it feels spacious. The songs can be slow and sensual or faster and good for moving energy. Allow yourself a moment at the beginning to see what and how your body is feeling to determine the music. Create a playlist for this practice. Take a few breaths and then begin. Listen to how your body wants to be moved, and if it helps to close your eyes at first, I encourage you to try this. Allow yourself permission to be here now. Allow yourself to move what is inside you, however that may look. Notice if there is pleasure, numbness, sadness, anger, or other. Remember that all are welcome. Let this be a short devotional practice to your body and its innate wisdom.
1-2 times a week to every day
At the end of the day, or when you have a spacious moment in the day, lay down flat on the floor, bed, or sofa. Feel your awareness come to the space. Feel your body being held by the floor or other. Notice sensations in the body as you lay there. What feels good, and maybe not so good. Become present to the sounds, smells, and what you might be feeling. Notice any emotions. Notice where you might come and go and do your best to treat them like passing clouds. Try to stay in the moment of being held by the earth, floor, or bed for a little longer than you might stay. Notice when you feel boredom or discomfort. Be with that too, again not indulging it too much.
